The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer: When To Be Concerned About a Mole

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and one of the first signs may be an abnormal mole. Knowing what to look for in a mole can help you determine when it might be a cause for concern. Dr. Ivan Flint, Dr. Audrey Dean, or Mark Pulver, PA, at Millcreek Dermatology in Salt Lake City, UT, offer comprehensive medical and cosmetic dermatology services, including the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

What You Need To Know About Skin Cancer

Moles are common, and most people have between 10 and 40 on their bodies. Moles are caused by the clumping of melanocytes, the skin cells responsible for producing color.

Regular skin exams are essential, and using the ABCDEs of moles can help you assess whether a mole may be concerning. When examining your moles, look for:

  • Asymmetry: Both halves of the mole should look the same.
  • Border: Moles should have well-defined, regular borders.
  • Color: Moles should have a uniform color throughout.
  • Diameter: Moles should be under 6 millimeters in diameter.
  • Evolving: Moles should not change in size, color, or shape over time.

Certain risk factors can increase your likelihood of developing skin cancer, including:

  • Fair skin and freckles
  • A tendency to burn easily and severely
  • A family history or previous history of skin cancer

It’s recommended to see a dermatologist for a professional skin examination at least once a year, and more frequently if you are at an increased risk. If necessary, Dr. Flint, Dr. Dean, or Mark Pulver, PA, may remove a tissue sample or mole for a biopsy to check for cancerous cells.
